A cheery Good Day to you all! How’s every little thing? The Music has slowed to a thin trickle as the year draws to a close, but thankfully there are still Independent Artists out there who are not beholden to Industry schedules, and don’t care that much about retail sales.
I have three titles to recommend to you and your kin. Stuff it in your socks!
Big Bill is a band from Austin, Texas that I discovered last year. This week they’ve released a new single which hopefully signifies a new album. Lead singer Eric Braden’s charming voice shares top billing on Bad Mood with Austin Poet/MC Chucky Blk. The track begins with stabbing guitar before Braden lists his gripes before noting that he’s “bummed out at the 7-Eleven.” The song takes an abrupt left turn with Chucky’s feature, upping the adrenaline with punchy drums. Pump yer skinny nerd fists!
A DJ and Producer from Cairo is infusing fresh blood into My Imaginary Nightclub. Hassan Abou Alam brings the breakbeats on his new EP Shalfata, with pounding bass and delicious ear candy. Four original tracks, plus four remixes from 3Phaz, ZULI, and others.
My Feature Pick this week is a charming reminder that, though the Music Industry is celebrating the holidays, Art still be Artin’. Dylan Pecora is a sculptor and video director based in New York City. His latest project as Ecology: Homestones is an audio/visual collage of loops and harsh noise, parsed with skrewed cinematic leaps and (*reads liner notes*) a gnome named Cheapskate(?). Be a dear and check out “s/t”. Beautiful noise.
*Note: the complete album hasn’t been released on BandCamp yet, my recommendation is based on the preview single. It’s that good! Unavailable elsewhere.
Next week looks like it may be even quieter than this week, but I’m confident that there will be something to sink our ears into.
Also, on the following Sunday (December 24) I will be publishing the 2023 New Music Jason Prize Shortlist of my five favourite albums of the year. You don’t want to miss that. Oh, no you don’t!
