The New Music I’m Listening To Obsequiously This Week, December 16 – 22, 2023:

We are firmly entrenched in the holidays, and the airwaves are filled with Mariah Carey and Wham. I hope everyone is healthy and happy, and family isn’t too much of a trial.

It wasn’t easy finding New Music in this environment, but I was able to scrape up three gifts to share with you. Instead of gold, frankincense and myrrh, I have Punk, Reggae and Jazz. Pa-rum-pumpum-pa!

To begin the week, a Producer from Munich has dropped a Single that is an instant floor-filla at My Imaginary Nightclub. Toroki’s That a Gwaan is a Heavy Dub Bass track featuring Isayah on the mic. Futuristic production gives this a mighty sheen.

LUCY is, according to Apple Translate, “four punk girls with no hair on their tongues…”. The Spanish quartet bring punchy guitar and shout-along choruses on their new EP REKOPILAĆION. Energetic and free Punk Rock.

Chicago continues to maintain a vibrant Live Music scene, and hasn’t forgotten its Jazz and Blues roots. And Jazz in particular remains in the hands of Artists who are pushing barriers in Sound, and imagining aural sculptures outside traditional norms. Percussionist Tim Daisy, and his Vox 4 ensemble are a fine example. The group consists of Daisy on Percussion and Marimba, James Falzone on Clarinet, Fred Lonberg on Cello and Electronics, with Gabby Fluke-Mogul on the violin. Their new album A New Hotel features Falzone’s Clarinet as its primary voice, but Daisy’s Marimba work on Nina’s Dance is a highlight. Intricate rhythms weave themselves around playfully. My Feature Pick for the week. Jazz, baby!

When visiting family this holiday season a good trick to make the time go quicker is to sit in a comfortable chair and go to sleep until it’s time to leave. There’s too much going on for anyone to notice, and it avoids arguments. Take it from your old pal New Music Jason! Mele Kalikimaka!

  1. Nothing obsequious about this week’s offerings! Happy Holidays Jason, and thanks for exposing me to lots of music I wouldn’t otherwise have known about.
