Upcoming New Releases (This Bird Has Flown) – Week Ending Friday, November 3, 2023:

I don’t know if it’s true anymore, but there was a time when TV shows would use decades-old recordings of audience laughter and applause to punctuate their sitcom or variety show. It was always strange to think that you would be listening to people laugh who are probably dead.

If that doesn’t seem strange to you in any way, there’s a “New” single from The Beatles coming on Thursday that might interest you. Using a recording of a man who has been dead for over forty years, and including the contributions from a man that has been dead for over twenty years, Paul McCartney (who is definitely not dead) and his complicit cohort Sir Ringo have hired Peter Jackson to help resurrect the band back together for one last shot at Beatle glory. If you’re interested here is the source material, to help you decide if it was worth it.

John Lennon – Now and Then (1978 demo)

It terms of actual New Music, we have another heavy week of some great titles. Not much in the way of Chart Botherers, unless you count Kevin Abstract, Marshmello, or the posthumous Jimmy Buffett.

Kevin Abstract – Blanket

Further down the docket, well past the “November” releases that weren’t nailed down, you’ll find plenty of surprise and intrigue. I’m looking forward to hearing from Black Grape, The Alchemist, Benny The Butcher, Matmos, Johnny Marr, and Prog legends Gong.

Gong – Tiny Galaxies (Single Edit)

My BandCamp Wishlist is sitting with a very reasonable seven titles. I’d like to spotlight guitarist and Singer/Songwriter Marnie Stern. She’s been away from her recording career, taking on the role of Guitarist in the House Band for The Late Show With Seth Meyers. After ten years, she has returned to the studio with a fresh batch catchy, glitchy, raunchy and angular Rock on The Comeback Kid. Stearn’s fingers are on fire, and my fists are pumping.

Marnie Stern – Plain Speak

I’ll be back on Friday with a hearty batch of New Music to nourish the soul. Hope you’ll join me. Be good to yourself!

  1. The video of “Now and Then” you embedded is no longer available due to some sort of copyright claim, so I found another on YouTube and gave it a listen. It’s an okay song as far as songs go, but I too think it’s strange. What’s the point at this point in time?

    1. Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll rectify the video situation. The song is not worth the hubbub.
